The town grew up around Oakshaw, on the west side of the White Cart river, where a Roman fort may have existed. <br />Its growth in the early 19th century was primarily through textiles (printing, bleaching, cotton thread) and the name Paisley was given to the Kashmiri pattern of curving shapes found on silk and cotton fabric. </p><p>Notable buildings include the Paisley Town Hall (1879-82), Paisley Museum and Art Gallery, the Coats Observatory (1883), the John Neilson Institution (1849-52), Stanely Castle (15th century, in the Stanely Reservoir to the south of the town), the Sma Shot Cottages, and St Mirins Roman Catholic Cathedral</p><p>from Paisley.org.uk</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Aircraft photo and copyright  Tom Boyle.</p>

<p>BAC 1-11  G-ASJH   Type 201AC   Serial Number 012  ( Burgh of Hawick ) </p><p>Hawick Pipe Band was first formed in 1937 by former Pipe Major Bob Short. The band was originally a Boys Brigade band, but as the boys grew older, it became Hawick Pipe Band.</p><p>The band played in many concerts, parades and Pipe Band Competitions, all over the world. From China and Japan, to America, to Glasgow. They first entered in competitions in Grade 4 and climbed all the way to Grade 2 where they did very well. But problems which couldn t be prevented, caused them to fall back to Grade 4 and almost fall apart. It has a total area of just over 600 square kilometres (239 square miles). The area of Barra is 23 square miles, the main village being Castlebay (Bàgh a Chaisteil). Barra is now linked by a man-made causeway to the neighbouring island of Vatersay (Eilean Bhatarsaigh). The west of the island has white sandy beaches backed by shell-sand machair and the east has numerous rocky inlets. Barra is abundant with stunning scenery, rare flowers and wildlife, which can be appreciated by coastal or hill walks, drives or cycle rides along the various small roads. Car and bicycle hire are available locally. Kisimul Castle at Castlebay is located on an island in the bay, so giving the village its name. Owing to its rugged setting and vast collection of Medieval and Georgian architecture, including numerous stone tenements, it is often considered one of the most picturesque cities in Europe. It forms the City of Edinburgh council area; the city council area includes urban Edinburgh and a 30-square-mile (78 km²) rural area. It has been the capital of Scotland since 1437 (replacing Scone) and is the seat of the Scottish Parliament. The city was one of the major centres of the Enlightenment, led by the University of Edinburgh, earning it the nickname Athens of the North. The Old Town and New Town districts of Edinburgh were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. There are over 4,500 listed buildings within the city. In the census of 2001, Edinburgh had a total resident population of 448,624. Edinburgh is well-known for the annual Edinburgh Festival, a collection of official and independent festivals held annually over about four weeks from early August. The number of visitors attracted to Edinburgh for the Festival is roughly equal to the settled population of the city. The most famous of these events are the Edinburgh Fringe (the largest performing arts festival in the world), the Edinburgh International Festival, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the Edinburgh International Film Festival, and the Edinburgh International Book Festival. Fifteen miles to the north lies the island of Mull; the eastern and southern horizons are bounded by the islands of Jura and Islay; and to the south west, just visible from a high point on a clear day, is the coast of Donegal in Ireland. To the west lies the Atlantic, with only the Du Hirteach lighthouse standing between Colonsay and Canada. Together with its semi-detatched neighbour Oransay, it forms an island group roughly ten miles long and two miles wide.</p><p>With just over one hundred inhabitants and its nearest neighbouring community almost twenty miles distant, Colonsay constitutes one of the most remote communities in Britain. The island has a primary school (currently with ten children and three pre-school starters), one hotel, a shop and post office, a tea shop and a number of other seasonal enterprises. There is a resident doctor, two churches (one Church of Scotland and one Baptist) but no resident minister. It is relatively small - about twelve miles long and three miles wide - and very flat. Although the name means (the land of corn) it has been described variously as (a raised beach) and the land below the waves.</p><p>The island has a mild climate with some of the highest levels of sunshine recorded anywhere in the British Isles. A tiny island, of typically Hebridean beauty, it holds a unique place in the story of Scotland and kindles the imagination of thousands who journey there each year. Yet it is also where people have lived. worked and worshipped over many centuries. It is about 10 miles long and five miles wide and is roughly rectangular in shape, not counting the tail of South Walls at its south east end. If you don t fancy the high places, the deeply indented coastline means you are never far from the sea.</p><p>Wildlife abounds on the Island, with birds from the tiny Goldcrest to magnificent Golden Eagle, mammals from Pygmy Shrew to Red Deer and fish from Saithe to Salmon. If you are lucky you might catch sight of the elusive Otter playing on the shore. It is Scotlands first new town, and lies on high ground on the south side of the Cathkin Braes, about 8 miles (13 km) southeast of Glasgow city centre. The Rotten Calder river flows along the east side of the settlement, northwards toward the River Clyde. Whilst Skye is bare, sweeping and majestic, Raasay offers a more intimate landscape where pockets of woodland and hidden corners abound. The island is quiet, away from the main tourist routes, and its little capital Inverarish is a delightful haven.</p><p>The flat-topped old volcano of Dun Caan is the objective for many visitors to the island, but there is an excellent network of shorter paths all over the island. <p> BAC 1-11 G-ASTJ  Type 201AC  Serial Number 085 (Royal Burgh of Dunfermline) photo and copyright Jon Gruitt at jOn flickr.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Dunfermline abbey became one of the richest in the country and it established satellite property in other parts of Scotland, as far north as Morayshire and Dornoch and south to Lothian and the Borders. A chapel to St Margaret was completed in the middle of the 13th century and her body was moved to the shrine there. Her husband, King Malcolm III was moved at the same time, apparently because it proved to be impossible to move one without the other - Margaret died a few days after her husband and eldest son had been ambushed and killed at the Battle of Alnwick, in Northumbria. </p><p>In 1303, King Edward I of England ordered the abbey and its buildings to be destroyed as part of his attempt to subdue Scotland. As part of his reconstruction of the country, King Robert the Bruce contributed to the rebuilding of the abbey.
