In the <strong>1930s Glasgow</strong> suffered severe unemployment. Shipbuilding was one of the industries hardest hit by the depression, although it revived with the coming of the Second World War. On the other hand the first serious slum clearance in Glasgow began in the 1930s. In 1938 the Empire Exhibition was held on the site of Bellahouston Park. Glasgow suffered From German bombing along with other towns in Clydeside in the years 1940-43. However, Glasgow escaped severe damage. From the 1950s employment in Glasgow changed. In the 1930s most jobs were in manufacturing but in the 1960s and 1970s the situation changed so that most jobs were in service industries.

In the flat valley of the River Clyde, great liners became landmarks visible for miles around during their construction.</p><p>Empress of Britain was built for Canadian Pacific Steamships, a regular customer. The company had four ships already under construction at Clydebank when, in 1927, it indicated it would order a new liner for its North Atlantic services. Models were tested in the experimental tank at Clydebank, and a quote of £2,096,500, won the contract for John Brown & Co in 1928.</p><p>Modern features such as a swimming pool and tennis courts ensured that the Empress of Britain compared favourably with contemporary rivals. She was the largest ship built for her owners. She was also the fastest, thanks to her Brown-Curtis steam turbines geared to four propellers which gave her a speed of 25 knots.</p>

<strong>The first step was to establish our name</strong>. We received a note that Scottish Airways International Limited was not available for the purpose of registration and our attention was drawn to a pamphlet on the regulations governing the use of the word Scottish the key paragraph of this had been marked with a tick by our solicitor and read: A name will not be allowed if it is misleading; for example, if it suggest a company with small resources is trading on a great scale or over a wide field. We considered three other options; <strong>Highland Airways/ Scotia Airways/ or Caledonian Airways.</strong> We all know now what was the chosen name. 05 The cheque that marked the beginning.
